An MHSAA champion in 1997 and 1998 in the 200m and 400m, he also set the St. Paul’s High School record in the 400m. His early success included a fourth-place finish in the 1995 junior varsity Provincial Cross Country Championships and a silver medal in the 400m at the 1996 Provincial Championships. A key member of his school’s relay teams, he played a leadership role in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. At the provincial level, Karl was a consistent competitor, representing Manitoba in the Tri-Provincial Championships from 1996 to 1999. He further showcased his talent at the Western Canada Games in 1999 and the Canada Games in 2005 competing in the 400m and 4x400m relay. During his university career, he achieved national success, finishing fourth in the 600m at the CIAM Championships in 2003. He was a three-time medalist in the 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays, serving as a team leader in 2002 and 2003. His standout performance also earned him a silver medal in the 600m at the CanWest Championships in 2003. Beyond individual accolades, Karl played a crucial role in team competitions, serving as a national team leader from 1995 to 1997 and securing a medley relay medal during that time. His dedication, leadership, and consistent performances made him a standout athlete in both sprint and middle-distance events.
