Ray Grynol

Ray started coaching high school sports when he started his teaching career at Gladstone High School in 1978. In 1983, he became a teacher at
St. John'sRavenscourt School, and continued coaching. In his 40 years of teaching, he has coached, refereed and convened volleyball, basketball and soccer. While he was an excellent volleyball and basketball coach, it is in soccer that he has left his true mark. Along with being the backbone of the St. John's-Ravenscourt soccer program for many years, he ran the annual SJR Invitational High School boys soccer tournament for 35 years. For many of those years, it had been the only major high school soccer tournament in the province. The event attracted teams from all over Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. Having won numerous Conference Championships and a Provincial Championship with his varsity boys team in 1998, Ray's accomplishments as a coach go far beyond the field of play. He always looked to develop young men on and off the soccer pitch. Some of his former athletes have gone on to have successful athletic careers at both Canadian and American Universities. Upon his retirement, Ray was presented with the Educator Emeritus Award, the most prestigious award that faculty members can receive at St. John's-Ravenscourt School. This award is only presented to the top educators at the school and is only presented occasionally.
